Home Solar Panels: A 25-Year Investment
Home solar panels use photovoltaic cells (PV or solar cells) that convert sunlight to electricity. These panels can be used to provide power to your home and other places. PV cells are groups of cells that are hooked up electrically and combined into one frame.
Space-Age Origins
Before they were used for solar panels, PV cells were used in space. Later on they were used in the power grid and to power home products for routine usage. For instance, you could use a lantern that runs on solar power and not have to purchase batteries. Allow it to charge for at least ten hours in the sun during the day. This will provide energy in the dark hours.
Solar panels that have PV cells are made of silicon. Silicon is a component that is made of semiconductor materials. The silicon takes in light after the light hits the cell. Then, the electrons flow freely into a current. Metal elements assist in drawing current for outside use. This process helps to turn on things like calculators and other items.
What Can They Be Used For?
A lot of home appliances and gadgets can be operated using solar energy. Here are some of those items: bicycle lights, radios, fluorescent lights, light pens, flashlights and lanterns, to name a few. Many homes now have taken to using home solar panels. You can also install them on the roof. If you use energy efficient appliances in your home, you won’t need a lot of panels to operate them. If you’re not able to install the panels, consult with your local home improvement store for assistance.
If you do plan to install energy efficient appliances or anything solar energy related, check to see if you have to get a permit first. Find out the requirements for the area that you reside in. If you do, contact your local permit office for further information. Depending on where you live, you may be exempt from taxes if the appliances are new. The federal government has a program where if you purchase energy efficient appliances, you can write it off on your taxes. The catch is that the purchases have to be for new appliances.
Minimal Maintenance
You will have to do very little maintenance every few years. The valves from solar thermal systems will have to be replaced at least every three to five years. The storage tanks are recommended for replacement every ten years. The PV systems themselves don’t require maintenance, but the solar panels will need to be cleaned every year. The lifespan of PV systems is about 25 years if taken care of properly.
Having home solar panels have increased in popularity. In addition to the government providing benefits for new energy efficient appliance customers, the energy companies are also giving breaks for people who use solar power and panels in their home. These incentives are something to seriously think about if you want to use solar panels in your home.
It may cost more initially to have solar panels installed for solar power usage. In the long run, the benefits will outweigh the cost of the original purchase.
